Winner of the May Photo Contest on Night Cityscapes
This
is the winning photo of the May photo contest on our
photography network.
It was taken by
Reza,
a member from Indonesia. This was a relatively tough contest
because the topic was night cityscape photography which is not
easy to master. Nevertheless, the
finalist's photos were very impressive. We are now starting
the June photo contest, the category is Sunset Photography. All
of the entries will be judged and narrowed down to three in the
last couple days of the month for final voting. If you would
like to participate, please join the
Monthly Photo Contest Group.

Photography Light Usage Tips
Alongside
photos taken by Ryan, Colin Aiken writes, "Light is the essence
of photography. It’s not things that we photograph, but the
light they reflect. Without light, there is no photography and
the way things look to us and the camera is entirely dependant
on the light that reaches them. People talk about the “quality”
of light, but in fact this is a combination of four different
things that all light sources possess. Every light has a level,
a color, a direction and can either be hard or soft."

Storm and Harsh Weather Photography Tips
Alongside
photos taken by Siro, Tedric Garrison writes: "In most cases,
extreme wind is not something you go out in on purpose. But for
those times when it comes upon you, make sure you have some type
of filter on (ideally you should do this all the time anyway).
Remember a twenty dollar filter is much easier to replace than a
three hundred dollar lens. If you kept your moisture bag with
you as regular camera gear, this would help dramatically. Use a
tripod, and if at all possible weigh your tripod down."

Black and White Photography Tips
Alongside
photos taken by Rory Mole, Andrew Goodall writes, "As a
photographer, black and white can allow you to discover a whole
new character in a familiar subject. For many digital
photographers, black and white photography is nothing more than
color photography converted by software. It is a matter for your
own judgement whether this is effective for your photographs.
Often the image you assume will convert beautifully to black and
white will prove a disappointment; sometimes a photo you never
imagined will surprise you and turn out great."

Tips on Capturing Great Landscape Photos
Alongside
photos taken by Daniel Chinchay, Ted Burns writes, "After
selecting the location which you feel will enable you to capture
a great picture, evaluate the amount of light available in the
area. If this is for an important picture, make the effort to
consider the effects of light at different times over the course
of 24 hours and decide which part of the day the light will be
most beneficial."
