In recent years the boundaries between cinematography and photography have become increasingly blurred. In this incredible video from Variable Productions, we can see how closely aligned they are:
Taken at the unique Hindi festival of Holi, the film was shot on the Phantom Flex, a camera that can capture up to 2,570 frames a second to create ultra slow motion. Because of this slow motion, it’s easy to see the fantastic use of great composition and color in the film. Many of the archetypal photographic composition techniques can be seen—rule of thirds, leading lines, balancing elements—and all are combined with a superb use of the light. A number of the shots are backlit but exposed for the subject, creating a surreal and pastel effect to the colors of the paint, and some use plain light colored backgrounds to punch out the vibrancy.
The final result is a masterclass in photographic composition and lighting.
“The next time you notice something that strikes you as interesting, stop for a second, start powering on your camera, think about why it’s unique, and snap the shot before you miss it. Life is extraordinary. Embrace it.”

That was great – like you said a masterclass in composition and lighting – I was concerned for the camera when that kid threw the cup of water
