In 2003, Linda Carey was diagnosed with breast cancer. To help her during the battle, her husband, Bob Carey, took on a unique photography project that helped inject a dose of humor into an otherwise dismal situation. Wanting to do more than pin a pink ribbon to his lapel, Bob instead made it a point to take portraits of himself all around the world wearing nothing more than a pink tutu in support of those fighting cancer worldwide. As Bob’s project continued to grow, Linda won her fight against breast cancer, only to have it return in a more aggressive stage that would travel to her liver. Take a look at the following video to hear their personal take on the inspiring story:
Now, nine years after Linda’s first diagnosis and the begnning of The Tutu Project, the two have more of a positive outlook than ever before, despite undergoing the continual battle against Linda’s cancer. The couple contributes their happiness to the positive outlook. The Tutu Project has helped not only them but thousands of other cancer patients as well.
“I’m trying to just let people know that you can express yourself. I’m doing it for other people. They come to me and say, ‘I wish I could do that because that’s how I feel.'”
Eager to reach out and inspire as many people as possible, the Careys have decided to self-publish a selection of the project’s images as well as anecdotes and humorous tales from throughout their journey. They are currently in the process of raising funds to make the book so that proceeds can be donated to cancercare.org and the Beth Israel Department of Integrative Medicine Fund.
