Interesting Photo of the Day: Riding Some of the World’s Roughest Seas

Most people think of surfing as a warm weather sport, but Chris Burkard, senior staff photographer for Surfer magazine, sees it a bit differently. For him, combining humans with the wild, surreal landscapes of the North Atlantic and the finesse of professional surfing is near the epitome of art. To feed his passion, he teamed up with a group of professional surfers and headed to Norway to surf some of the roughest storm-swept seas around. Here’s one of the photos that came of it:

To get this shot, Burkard and his team had to brave waters of 35 to 45F degrees, stormy seas, and strong riptides. Was it worth it?
