It’s that time of year again. Some parents may shed a few bittersweet tears; others might breathe a big sigh of relief—the kids are headed off to school. But many don’t have the luxury of hopping onto a bright yellow school bus. Children who live in remote or impoverished areas often have no choice but to walk to school or make do with whatever kind of transportation they can get their hands on—whether that’s a tire tube to float down a river in the Philippines, an overloaded horse-and-cart in India, or even a zip line in the jungles of Colombia:
In the photos above, children are going to great lengths for the privilege of going to school, sometimes in dangerous conditions. These kids’ determination is nothing if not inspiring—a good reminder of the value of education—and that many children around the world still need better access to it.
