Who knew that a water source and a handful of dollar store glow sticks could be all the tools necessary to create a phenomenal photograph? Artists Sean Lenz and Kristoffer Abildgaard collaborated to create this enchanting photo, which combines natural environmental beauty with fanciful glowing colors tracing river currents invisible to the human eye:

In Lenz and Abildgaard’s series, the two traveled across Northern California to scout out perfect locations. From there, the technique they utilized was actually quite simple. While one half of the duo dropped a number of Cyalume glow sticks from a waterfall, the other manned a camera at the base of the fall. Each exposure in the series ranges between 30 seconds to 7 minutes in order to fully capture the fluid movements.

For all those worried about the environmental hazards of this process, have no fear. The buoyant light sticks stayed sealed throughout the process and were collected at the end of each exposure to avoid polluting the water.
