When faced with identical circumstances, no two photographers come up with the same solution. Every artist has an eye of their own, and this particular exercise shows just how different someone else’s view of the world can be.
Photographers Ruby James, Irene Rudnyk, Derrick Freske, and Jessica Kobeissi each challenged one another to a fairly straightforward assignment. Using just a single model, each photographer had to craft an image within the confines of their peer’s stylistic choices:
The rules of the challenge were simple. Ruby, Irene, Derrick, and Jessica each picked a unique outfit and location for a photo shoot that in some way reflected their individual style. From there, they had five minutes to craft a photo using the predetermined elements. As consolation, each photographer was allowed the use of their personal gear. Derrick used a Nikon D750 equipped with a 50mm f/1.4 lens. Jessica opted for the 5D Mark III and versatile 24–70mm lens. Both Ruby and Irene chose 85mm f/1.2 lenses.
Despite the time constraints and and limited creative control, when seeing the final results it’s clear that each artist’s voice reigned supreme despite the added influence of their peers.
Though outfits and location helped shape the initial direction of each picture, similarities in composition and flair remained consistent for each photographer throughout the shoots.
The lesson to be learned? Follow your intuition. Trust your vision. The more you do so, the more you’ll develop a personal style of your own that sets you apart from the rest and allows you to fully express your personal perspective.
