Interesting Photo of the Day: Photographing a Horse from a Freight Train

Don Bartletti has spent the past 36 years as a photojournalist. For a quarter of a decade, he’s maintained an integral position at the Los Angeles Times. Despite years of experience under his belt, Bartletti is anything but jaded. His photographs still manage to capture the excitement and vibrancy packed into life’s fleeting moments:

Sourced from a decades-long project documenting the trials and tribulations of Central American child migrants as they journey to the U.S., this shot plays just a small role in telling a much larger story.

Alongside 60 stowaways headed north, Bartletti clung to the roof of a freight train when he captured these two galloping alongside the tracks on horseback. As they raced the La Bestia, the pair was met with laughs and cheers from the passengers in search of a more prosperous future in America.

Literally capturing the transitory nature of the migrants, it should come as no surprise that this particular image was included in a 2003 Pulitzer Prize winning photo essay. To this day, Bartletti continues to document Central American migrants, specifically focusing on the countless children willing to put themselves at risk in order to reunite with parents living and working beyond the Mexican border.
