Interesting Photo of the Day: Candle in Snow

When it comes to composing images, perspective plays a pivotal role. The way you position, point or turn your camera can make a huge difference. The impact can be so great that even an everyday object can appear alien based on how you shoot it. Take for instance the following image shot by Reddit user who goes by the name of PJCAPO. Depending on how you see it, the image can be very confusing at first. Is it an aerial shot of a perfectly round island? Or is that an orb in the sky? You can even think of it as a view of a nuclear explosion over the ocean. Thankfully, it is an image of something that’s much more peaceful.

As the photographer explains, the image is of a candle in the snow. The top-down perspective with which he shot this image has given a totally unique look and feel to this common household object. Besides the perspective, it’s also the interplay of light and shadows in the snow that adds to the illusion.
