Adventure is Calling II: Travel Photographer’s Encore Timelapse is Stunning

About a year ago, photographer Shane Black and two of his friends left behind their comfortable work routine and embarked on a journey that produced a mesmerizing timelapse. It was a product of visiting 32 states and 13 national parks on an epic 13,000 mile drive. This year, they decided to do an encore. Over the summer, they drove nearly 14,000 miles through the US and Canada, a trip that fell just short of four months. Black’s efforts produced nearly 20,000 stills this time:

If the last timelapse was stunning, this one’s nothing short of magical. The old adage that travel broadens the mind is true. But it all depends on where you go, how you choose to stay, and who you meet. Living under starry nights and spending time gazing at the breathtaking colors of an evening sky may not be the definition of traveling for some. But that’s exactly what you need to do to get out of your comfort zone and create a timelapse like this one.

If for nothing else, these images are worth watching for the sheer work put in by the photographer. If making those 20,000 stills wasn’t enough, he had to edit them and then put everything together to create the timelapse footage. Like he mentioned when he published the first video of this series, on many occasions he had only a short amount of time to shoot upon arriving at a destination.

motion control devices for shooting time-lapse videos

Black used a Canon 5D Mark III and a 5D Mark II as his shooting tools. He paired them with a selection of lenses: a Canon 16-35L II, a Canon 24L II, a Canon 50mm f/1.4, and a Canon 70-200L II IS. He used an eMotimo TB3 and a Dynamic Perception Stage Zero Dolly for motion control. To support his camera and lenses he used Vanguard Tripods. The footage was edited and compiled using Adobe Lightroom, After Effects and LRTimelapse.
