An erupting volcano looks pretty impressive from the ground with it’s glowing hot lava and massive flumes of smoke and fog, but have you ever seen a photograph of one erupting that was taken from space? The image below was captured by astronauts aboard the International Space Station just after the Sarychev Volcano, located on the Kuril Islands just northeast of Japan, erupted in 2009.

According to NASA, the ash created from the eruption forced so much hot air upwards it caused the clouds to part as a reaction to the volcanic heat mixing with the cooler temperatures found at cloud level.

The reaction undeniably made a perfect photo op for the ISS team.
