The fun thing about jewelry photography is that you don’t need to be a jewelry photographer or a jewelry business owner to try it out. Something about jewelry photography gives us a feeling of happiness and personal satisfaction when doing it. Thankfully, you can easily try it out at your home as it doesn’t require any complicated setup.
In today’s exciting video, we have photographer Amanda Campeanu with us. Here, she shares 3 simple scenes that you can try for your next jewelry photoshoot at home. Then, she also shows you her photography lighting setup and how she achieves soft light that compliments the jewelry pieces:
Presentation is key when you are photographing jewelry. They are after all items of luxury. So, to give your images a luxurious feel, how you place and present those pieces of jewelry becomes crucial. And to do so, props come in really handy. Like Campeanu shows in the video, you can use something as simple as travertine tiles or even a paper roll to help you create aesthetically pleasing and visually interesting images.
“When it comes to jewelry photography, probably one of the hardest parts is dealing with the reflections.”
Like any other genre of photography, lighting is crucial when photographing jewelry as well. But the fact that jewelry is very reflective makes it quite tricky to plan your lighting.
Campeanu’s simple solution is to use large diffusion papers to soften up the light. This also makes the light sources appear larger and adds a streak of elegant white light to the final image. And as you can see in the comparison itself, the difference it makes is pretty huge.
Towards the end of the video, she also shows how you can use mirrors to take your jewelry photography to the next level. This is a must-try tip.
Whether you’re just a beginner photographer or someone who’s thriving to become a jewelry photographer, we highly recommend that you try out the tips and tricks that Campeanu shares in this video. You’ll surely be surprised with how much better your images will turn out.
