The Bonneville Salt Flats State Park near the border of Utah is an excellent location for a photo shoot. The salt laden ground is colored white and stretches on for miles. Plants do not grow in the Salt Flats and the lack of their presence combined with the solid white earth is almost other worldly. Perhaps that’s […]
EngineerGuy recently published a book titled, Eight Amazing Engineering Stories, and it just so happens that one of those amazing engineering feats belongs in the world of photography. In the video tutorial version of the book, Bill Hammack from the University of Illinois takes apart a Canon A80 to expose its CCD, or charge coupled […]
Should You Change to Photoshop CS6? Adobe Photoshop CS5 was introduced not that long ago. Now we have the newly updated, Photoshop CS6. Rather than get all crazy by adding exotic or bizarre new features, Adobe has worked hard to simply improve upon the basics. While many of the improvements are best suited to, and for the benefit of, hard-core designers, overall I think advanced users can find a speedier workflow and improved finished photo edit quality.
Think models have an easy job? Not so fast! There’s more to being a cover model than just showing up to a shoot and looking pretty. Take a look at the video that Target (yes, the retail store) has released showing you just what model Coco Rocha goes through to get the perfect cover shot: […]

However, filters still play a very important role, and if you can understand how filters work and what they can be used for, you will be able to capture photographs in a way you never imagined. There are a number of filters that photographer’s use most of the time and even combinations of different filters are occasionally used to get the desired effect.
Photographing water is no easy task. It’s hard to control, can be complicated to light, and, in Atlanta based photographer, Alex Koloskov’s case, it tends to be a little bit messy. But don’t let that discourage you from giving it try. In a recent beauty shoot, Koloskov used water to add dramatic interest to the shots, […]
Expedition 31 Flight Engineer Don Pettit says, “My star trail images are made by taking a time exposure of about 10 to 15 minutes. However, with modern digital cameras, 30 seconds is about the longest exposure possible, due to electronic detector noise effectively snowing out the image. To achieve the longer exposures I do what many amateur astronomers do. I take multiple 30-second exposures, then ‘stack’ them using imaging software, thus producing the longer exposure.”
