So you bought yourself a DSLR camera. What now? You obviously need more lenses. Figuring out which lenses will suit your specific needs is not always easy. There are several abbreviations and specifications you need to know, and different manufacturers use completely different abbreviations for exactly the same properties. Below is a review of the […]
The photo-journalistic style of wedding photography is becoming more popular and heavily sought after by couples. Award-winning wedding photojournalist Kerry Morgan has put together an excellent book that seems to cover all the bases of the wedding photography. Not only is it a great read, it contains hundreds of excellent example photos to spur your creativity and guide you through a typical wedding day. Documentary wedding photography is about capturing the day, as the events unfold with minimal interference or instruction from the photographer.
Trey Ratcliff just announced the release of an in-depth HDR Photography training, something I am very eager to watch and study. I am a huge fan of Trey’s work, he is truly one of the pioneers in HDR photography. Frankly, I am a little surprised he is giving viewers an in-depth look at how he […]
Today I had the pleasure of interviewing Jason Lavengood, a professsional photographer based in Noblesville, Indiana. He is primarily a wedding photographer, but is also very well versed in stylized portraiture, fashion, commercial, HDR, and landscape photography. How would you describe your photographic style? I think as with all artists, my style has “evolved” through […]
Photographing a fire pit is a delight and a problematic venture. First, to get a good shot of fire, it has to be a darker time of day, such as at dusk. Since that is the case, and darkness has its own set of problems like secondary light sources and their effect on the camera lenses, it is often difficult to get a good shot. Even the moon can cause problems. So, here is a short tutorial to enable you to take a good photo of a fire pit. Your first consideration has to be that of whether or not your camera can take night pictures.
Today I had the pleasure of interviewing Jim Worrall, an incredibly talented landscape photographer based in Melbourne, Australia. He is well known for his style of capturing the dynamics of water motion along with breathtaking scenery. How did you first get into photography? I took up photography in 2006 in response to a nagging creative […]

I was thrilled to recently interview one of the most popular members of our photography network who agreed to answer some questions for our readers. Ryan is a photographer based in Tokyo, Japan who brings a unique style to photojournalism. What tips or advice do you have for other aspiring photographers? Love what you’re doing! For me that’s the core of photography. Don’t do it because you have to, do it because you love to! And if you do, that will really show in your shots! And for starters, don’t focus on being a pro, you won’t get there that fast. Take time to learn, take time to master what you are into.
Stage photography is by nature different because you’re capturing a performance where practically anything can happen if you haven’t seen the show before. And the performers are going to be as dynamic as they ever get. Its in a class of documentary photography. What happens may only happen once and it is therefore both difficult and fun. What follows is my take on how I feel about it. I will cover preparation, being ready, passes shooting modes and in particular manual mode.
