Enter RAW files – they might look horrible, but your options are open The way to think about it is that when you release the shutter, the sensor gets some digital information. Think of this info as the RAW file (it isn’t but don’t worry about it). Literally the 1’s and 0’s from the sensor. When your normal camera produces a jpeg it takes this info, does all sorts of clever stuff and produces your gloddy saturated beautiful jpeg and simultaneously throws away what it thinks is doesn’t want. RAW files carry a great deal more information than JPEGs.
Today I had the pleasure of interviewing Christine Szeredy, a professional photographer who specializes in capturing portrait and fashion photos for editorial and advertising. Her unique style has attracted a lot of attention on the photography network. My favorite thing is to work in various locations, with the goal of creating a connection between the model and the surroundings. I tend to switch between dramatic and being over the top to simplicity depending on location, clothing and intent of the picture.
Post-processing in photography is a very difficult art to master, most professionals develop their own unique style and approach to editing photos through lots of trial and error. Documentary and travel photographer Mitchell Kanashkevich has constructed an excellent E-book that walks you through the process of how to effectively and professionally post-process your photos. This […]
HDR photography allows one to stretch one’s creative approach to the photographic image in ways that never before seemed possible. Like any approach, however, one must learn some basic elements of the craft before one becomes truly proficient in the art afforded by the technique. In this post I explore some basic concepts of dynamic […]
ICELAND, A Monograph, is a showcase of exceptional photographs and it holds nothing back with respect to how the images were created. This eBook is the first look at 39 of the images David created in Iceland. The curtain is pulled back on technique – like how he used three different ND filters to work through an exposure problem, as well as the more internal processes related to creation – like finding inspiration and working through the frustrations of finding one’s vision. The process and thinking behind those photographs are explained from a technical angle and the discussion of post-processing includes two free downloadable Adobe Lightroom Presets.
Today I was very pleased to interview Niklas Daniel, a professional skydiving aerial photographer who has spent his career up in the sky. The skills required to capture great shots in the air are very unique and require a great deal of training and practice. Not only do you have to be up to speed on how to take great photos (without using your hands), you have to be an expert flier in freefall, an expert canopy pilot, and you have to manage the additional risk that comes with carrying the camera equipment. Niklas Daniel is widely regarded as one of the best photographers in the industry.
Photo lighting – it’s one of the most important aspects to the way you take your photos, and they way they turn out. The difficulty lies in the different, constantly changing lighting conditions of certain settings: photography can be indoors or outdoors, in the morning or evening, sometimes in changing conditions. This article will try to set out some basic ideas and tips for you to use. Various techniques that are used by professional photographers when shooting and processing photos can reverse the poor lighting and get good shots.
So you bought yourself a DSLR camera. What now? You obviously need more lenses. Figuring out which lenses will suit your specific needs is not always easy. There are several abbreviations and specifications you need to know, and different manufacturers use completely different abbreviations for exactly the same properties. Below is a review of the […]
The photo-journalistic style of wedding photography is becoming more popular and heavily sought after by couples. Award-winning wedding photojournalist Kerry Morgan has put together an excellent book that seems to cover all the bases of the wedding photography. Not only is it a great read, it contains hundreds of excellent example photos to spur your creativity and guide you through a typical wedding day. Documentary wedding photography is about capturing the day, as the events unfold with minimal interference or instruction from the photographer.
Trey Ratcliff just announced the release of an in-depth HDR Photography training, something I am very eager to watch and study. I am a huge fan of Trey’s work, he is truly one of the pioneers in HDR photography. Frankly, I am a little surprised he is giving viewers an in-depth look at how he […]
