There have been quite a few timelapse videos making an appearance lately and Randy Halverson’s, Temporal Distortion, might just be one of my favorites. His timelapse takes us into remote areas in the United States and shows us what the night sky looks like sans light pollution. It’s magical and if you don’t believe me, have a look for yourself in the following video. Halverson notes that much of what we see in the video is not able to be seen by the naked eye. Halverson called on his Canon 5D Mark II and Canon 60D to capture thousands of images, with exposure times anywhere from 15 to 30 full seconds each.

In this two-minute long time-lapse, photographers from Beep Show, illustrate the cross-continental flight from San Francisco, California to Paris, France. The video starts at take-off and ends on landing; however, it is noted that the beginning and ending of the video are 3D models that were rendered because of restrictions that are set in place prohibiting the use of electronic devices during these stages of flight, though there is a lot of debate over the truth of those statements. The filmmaking collective known as Conscious Minds are known for using conceptual ideas in producing spots for the internet. When they teamed up with Levi’s, in 2010, they produced the viral video, “Guy Walks Across America.” The two-minute short features a timelapse of the crew’s journey across the United States. In making the film, the group employed the popular Canon 5D MKII to capture the trip. The director of the film also mentions the use of an Apple iPad, which was used to set up the proper framing of each shot.

Clouds in Time-lapse Photography: The Unseen Sea

The Unseen Sea, a timelapse video by San Francisco, California based photographer, Simon Christen, has gone viral on Vimeo, racking up over 1.5 million views since it has been posted. The camera work seen here took place at various locations throughout San Francisco over the course of a year. I am always shooting in full manual mode and then adjust the exposure as the light changes. The exposure really varies depending on the shot. For example a bright city needs shorter shutter speeds then fog illuminated by moon light. The night shots take a little while to capture all the light.
