On July 11, 2014, New Yorkers were treated to a rare solar phenomenon –“Manhattanhenge”–an urban event that occurs when the sun aligns precisely with the Manhattan street grid. The effect lights up both the north and south sides of each cross street simultaneously, creating a highly-anticipated, beautiful sight:
Like Stonehenge–where light lines up with the stones on the solstices–Manhattanhenge happens only twice a year, creating a spectacle that delights both photographers and astronomers alike.
