Walking Across America: Time-lapse Project

Walking Across America: Time-lapse Project

The filmmaking collective known as Conscious Minds are known for using conceptual ideas in producing spots for the internet. When they teamed up with Levi’s, in 2010, they produced the viral video, “Guy Walks Across America.” The two-minute short features a timelapse of the crew’s journey across the United States. In making the film, the group employed the popular Canon 5D MKII to capture the trip. The director of the film also mentions the use of an Apple iPad, which was used to set up the proper framing of each shot.

Clouds in Time-lapse Photography: The Unseen Sea

The Unseen Sea, a timelapse video by San Francisco, California based photographer, Simon Christen, has gone viral on Vimeo, racking up over 1.5 million views since it has been posted. The camera work seen here took place at various locations throughout San Francisco over the course of a year. I am always shooting in full manual mode and then adjust the exposure as the light changes. The exposure really varies depending on the shot. For example a bright city needs shorter shutter speeds then fog illuminated by moon light. The night shots take a little while to capture all the light.

Iceland Volcano Eruption Time-lapse

Iceland Volcano Eruption Time-lapse

In the spring of 2010, the Icelandic volcano, Eyjafjallajökull, erupted, shutting down airways all across Europe. Sean Stiegemeier organized a sponsored trip to the country to capture the natural disaster in a beautiful way. He used his Canon 5D MKII to film a time lapse of the eruption over the course of 1 1/2 days. Dynamic Perception loaned Stiegemeier a prototype of the MILapse dolly, which is now being marketed as the Dynamic Perception Stage Zero Dolly Kit, an affordable alternative to the popular Kessler dollies.

HDR Time-lapse Photography

HDR Time-lapse Photography

Beautiful time-lapse photography is difficult enough to achieve, but attempting it in HDR (high dynamic range) photography adds another layer of complexity as was done here successfully in France (Normandy & Britany). This means the photographer has to take bracketed photos at different exposure levels for each individual frame, and then post-process those bracketed sets […]

Dubai Time-lapse

Dubai Time-lapse

Why have just one moonset and one sunrise when you can have two of each? This is a 28 hour time-lapse shot from one location captured by Gerald Donovan. It consists of 3359 individual photographs. The entire timelapse was shot on aperture priority and fixed ISO. It’s important to make sure that you set a combination of aperture and ISO that will allow the camera to take shots at the brightest time of day without hitting the camera’s fastest shutter speed limit, and will also not require a shutter speed longer than the timelapse interval when it’s dark. This was shot at f/5.6 and ISO320. Fastest shutter speed was 1/2500, slowest 6 seconds.

Time-lapse Photography: Landscapes by Dustin Farrell

Time-lapse Photography: Landscapes by Dustin Farrell

The field of time-lapse photography takes a substantial amount of research and testing to master, especially with variable lighting conditions. Dustin Farrell recently released his second video focusing on amazing landscapes of Arizona and Utah which has collected 2.5 million views in the last month. Every frame of this video is a raw still from a Canon 5D Mark II DSLR and processed with Adobe After Effects. Most of the motion control for this video was done with the Stage Zero Dolly by Dynamic Perception. In addition to the Stage Zero, I also used a three axis motion controlled CamTram. Take a moment and enjoy.

Photoblogging: How to Start a Photo Blog

Over the past couple years I have heard about people blogging; I honestly never paid much attention and just had no interest in it. To me blogging was for vain or bored people—and I was certainly neither. Then a little over a year ago I heard the term photoblog and I was suddenly interested in […]
