Mountains are magical and majestic — justly, often featuring in equally fantastical sci-fi and fantasy movies and TV series. You know, like Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones. Yuriy Garnaev loves to capture them, particularly in their rawest “straight out of a movie” form. For this stunning shot of the Dolomites, he even managed to include himself. No, not photobombing, but actually framed far off in the distance, an insignificant speck wondering at their sheer magnitude.
Based in the mountainous Pacific Northwest, Yuriy is very experienced when it comes to mountain landscape photography. He took this particular image on his Sony A7R III camera, using a Tamron 28-200mm lens. To include himself, he set his camera to shoot every 15 seconds. He also took multiple shots, stacking the two best exposures — as far as composition and lighting went — to create this particular image.
In retrospect it’s very hard to see me from this far away (better on a 4×5 vertical crop), but I wanted to capture the full majesty of this range bathed in the evening light.
