The landscape a photographer grows up in shapes their art. For Collin Toews, British Columbia and Alberta is this exact territory – home to the majestic Canadian Rockies. Plus, stunning glacial lakes, pine forests, and decidedly wintery weather. In this snap, he’s captured the ultimate festive scene!
A train passing through The Rockies near Lake Louise. Toy trains are a classic Christmas gift, so this real-life trademark red one perfectly complements the snowy weather. In front, a few snow-capped pines set off the scene while pine forest stretches as far as the eye can see behind towards the sunlit Rockies.
Every year the Canadian Pacific Railway has a holiday train that travels across the country going from town to town, raising money for charity and playing concerts from one of its cars. This is a bucket list shot for me as it passes through Morants Curve in Banff National Park.
Composed of a 6-shot panorama, Collin also played around with post-production editing to get the lighting spot-on. In particular, he used luminosity and curve adjustment in Photoshop to achieve the soft lighting effect. He also shot at 23mm (1.5x APS-C crop factor or 35mm equivalent) to compress the image.
