Garrett McNamara, a 45 year old surfer took the roaring waters in near perfect surfing conditions. McNamara waited patiently for the swell to come in as his wife, Nicole, observed and communicated with McNamara’s rescue team informing them of the massive bomb that was approaching. As you can see in the photo below, McNamara went for and conquered the beast with plenty of style as photographer Tó Mané documented the moment from afar:
Photo captured by Tó Mané, who has been called one of the best surf photographers in Europe. The surfer had set out on a–now decade long–quest to break the world record of the largest wave ever surfed. McNamara, who already holds the title after riding a 78′ monster off the coast of Nazaré, Portugal in November of 2011, believes he has raised the bar by surfing what is being reported as a 100′ wave, also off the coast of Nazaré, Portugal.
Shortly after McNamara switched his focus to big wave riding around back in 2000, he half-jokingly said he wanted to be the first person to ride a 100′ foot wave. By the looks of it, his dream of the ultimate epic ride has come true; however, at this time, McNamara is still waiting for the Guinness Book of World Records who, with the help of Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards judges, will determine whether the wave is indeed a new world record.
