Contrast, in photography, is one of those elements that can easily elevate your photos to the next level. And thankfully, we can have contrast in various aspects. It could be in terms of colors, luminance, and mood among others. When composing your image, if you’re able to capture and convey a sense of contrast, then the impact that’ll have is beyond what we can put in words. Take for instance the image below that was taken by photographer Enis. The visual impact that he’s been able to create through contrast is surely exceptional:
“I shot the photo just as the train left, by that I also made sure to not get too many people in the shot.”
Before jumping onto the contrast aspect of this photography, we must appreciate Enis’s effort to nail the composition. In fact, it’s the synergy between the composition and the contrast that makes this image so interesting to look at.
At first glance, we can all notice the stark difference in the luminosity and the vibrance between the two sides of the metro station. This combined with the perfect alignment between the top and the bottom edges of the platform creates an illusion of whether we’re looking at two different places.
Moreover, the colored strips on the bottom and the light strips at the top work beautifully as leading lines. They do a great job of drawing us right into the image.
Considering that Enis just did a simple color grading to get the cold look, and reduced clarity around the lights to make them glow, we must appreciate how pleasing it is to look at the image.
What are your thoughts regarding this image? We’d love to hear from you as well.
