Interesting Photo of the Day: Night at the Train Station

Cities and public spaces are usually bustling with people and activity. As such, there’s nothing quite as spooky as happening upon abandoned urban areas — as Joshua Singh found out! He took what one could arguably claim is the eeriest of abandoned train station snaps. Complete with thick fog and sickly glimmering neon lights, we’re just waiting for the zombies to emerge!

For this snap, Joshua took an unusual yet fitting route by opting for film. Cinestill 800Tungsten high-speed color negative film — which is designed for use in tricky low-light conditions — to be more specific. Used by famous cinematographers, it lends a decidedly retro feel to the image. Its asymmetrical composition is quite distinct, as well. One Redditor commented on the similarity of the image to the paintings of Edward Hopper.

To which Joshua replied;

Thank you, he’s a huge inspiration…

The Cinestill800T film also adds a grainy effect that modern digital cameras typically iron out. Plus, it really picks up on the warmth and glow of the neon lights. You’re in luck if you’re wondering where the image was taken. As the photographer shared on the subreddit thread, the location is the Daly City, California, BART station. Located in the Bay Area, San Francisco, it’s known for its trademark fog, which is present most of the year.
