Interesting Photo of the Day: Oil & Water Macro

Macro photography has to be one of the most interesting genres of the craft. You never know what you’re going to see. Based on the level of magnification you choose to work with, even the most mundane object can appear intriguing. Take for instance the following image that was shot by a photographer who goes by the name of Bugsterman. Before reading further, try and guess what is it that you’re looking at:

If you couldn’t guess, the image is of oil and water in a Pyrex oven dish, 5 mm thick. He shot the image with a Canon 90D camera and Canon 100mm macro lens at f/2.8, 1/640s and ISO 100. And as for the lighting, he simply lit it using two flexible IKEA lights from under the dish. For the colorful effect, he covered the lights with colored paper diffusers.

It’s fascinating to see how the different shapes and colors come together and make the image come to life. And if the image reminds you of a lava lamp, you’re not alone.

Moreover, the clean and vibrant look of the image is also reminiscent of the smartphone wallpapers. However, the fact that this is a macro image and not something that’s rendered using a computer makes it even more impressive.
