If lighting conditions are less than idle, they demand the photographer to be skilled for the image to be interesting. Well, that’s what we think after all. In cases where the photographers match the situation’s demands, the photos come out engaging and mind-blowing.
But it seems that if you have a basic understanding of the gear and pay attention to your composition, your image can still shine even if it was taken in unfavorable conditions. Take for instance the following photo shot by a photographer who goes by the name of FishMonkeyCow. He shot it during the night and that too amidst a heavy downpour. Yet, it has come out really well:
He shot the image with a Sony A7RII camera and a 70-200mm lens. And if you’re interested in the camera settings, you might be surprised to know that he shot this image with the camera in full auto mode. The only adjustment he made was setting the exposure compensation to a “-1” value. This allowed him to retain the dark look and retain the moody feeling of the image.
“Gear doesn’t matter too much. I think for me the vibe, light, mood, and story are more important. Go and shoot in heavy rain, cool things tend to happen.”
The immediate thing we can notice about the image is how incredible the tones are. There’s this perfect mix of bright, grey, and dark tones, and the color palette although limited, is enough to add life to the image. By perfectly framing the mother and the child against a bright background, he’s done an excellent job of creating their silhouette. This way the eyes are getting drawn right into them. Perfect framing!
If you believe that you need the perfect lighting and camera settings to get a great image, this photograph might be able to change your mind. After all, the photographer took this image in auto mode during a typhoon at night.
