When advertising works well, the audience doesn’t even realize they’re looking at an ad. That seems to be the effect that surf photographer Dustin Humphrey’s photos have, as they’re a hit on social media while also being a quiet branding hit for surfing clothiers Insight 51:
Humphrey’s full series, Dopamine, is full of shots like the one above—Photoshopped composites of surfers above and youth below. (Several shots in the full series feature nudity—consider yourself forewarned.) Humphrey, who has spent time as a staff photographer for Surfing Magazine and traveled to Southeast Asia frequently for a decade, has since backed out of the commercial surf photography game. But he does have some parting advice for budding photographers:
“Focus on the eyes. They’re they windows to the soul. Sounds cheesy, I know, but it’s true. I always ask people to remove their sunnies.”
