A Day in the Life of a Pop Music Photographer

Filmmaker Paul Brasil explores the life of a popular music photographer in this short film. After years of struggling, Lerner got started shooting Katy Perry concerts when she was just becoming popular; now, in this film, he tours with Justin Beiber as his official photographer, sifting through packed coliseums for that elusive iconic shot. In the video he discusses his methods of networking through social media such as Tumblr, Twitter, and Facebook, and runs us through the type of equipment he uses and his philosophy which favours simple and minimal gear, preferring to use a single Canon EOS 1D, a few select lenses, and a single flash. In this insight into the day-to-day world of a photographer on such a prolific gig, it’s inspiring to witness his earnestness and gratitude for the opportunities he’s been given through his career. It reminds us that becoming a professional photographer isn’t about spending thousands on schooling, or about carrying a camera at all times, taking a picture at every possible opportunity.

Following your dreams begins with seeing them sharply and clearly – it’s about knowing what you want to achieve, going into the world without reservation or apprehension, and just simply doing the work to get you where you want to be without getting caught up in the fashion or the fear.

“Sometimes I step back and I think about it, and I’m like, “I could still be still doing street photography or shooting local shows, and just be stuck in a place where, you know, I don’t really want to be. But I’m amazed every day to be doing what I’m doing and I never take it for granted.”
