In the following video clip, Larry Becker offers up a few quick tips on how you can liven up your wedding photography portfolio simply by injecting some creative still life portraits into it. Becker’s advice is to the point and clear enough that even beginning amateur photographers can understand. Making sure to cover all the basics, Becker touches on the importance of composition, lenses, and how to effectively use a speedlight. Take a few moments to hear what Becker has to offer:
Here are few pointers from the video:
- Take the time to meet and get to know the bride and groom before the day of the wedding. This will help you understand their personal style and shed light onto what they are expecting from you as a photographer.
- Instead of using the same lens for the duration of the event, use a variety that includes a macro and a prime lens with a wide aperture, such as f/1.4.
- When using a flash, don’t mount it onto you camera; it will create unattractive hard shadows. Instead use cable or trigger to use a speedlight off the camera, which will provide a more appealing light source.
- When composing your shots, make sure that what you are photographing is telling a story. In the following image, the two rings help to make it clear that a wedding is taking place.
“When it comes to capturing a great set of wedding images, it takes more than a nice DSLR. Good wedding photography is a series of thoughtful images captured by a professional who knows how to capture a moment, how to capture some of those fairy tale visions, and how to capture some of the feelings of the day.”
