Unlike with many other genres of photography, you don’t have much control over street photography. Moments happen and pass very quickly. So if you’re not prepared, you’ll risk losing out on precious photo opportunities. If you’re looking to improve your street photography skills, we have photographer Faizal Westcott with five helpful tips that have improved his street photography over the years:
“There are no shortcuts to getting better at street photography. This genre consists mostly of failure and repetition.”
One of the most challenging aspects of street photography is that there’s no room for being ill-prepared. You’ve got to be on your toes, ready with the camera, while also being observant and preempting every move that people around you can make.
This means always keeping your camera in a ready-to-shoot position. As Westcott explains in the video, the speed with which you can maneuver your camera could become the deciding factor between whether or not you’ll get your image. In the same context, it’s worth considering keeping some camera functions in auto mode. This way, you can spend more time on the art side of the image while the camera does the heavy lifting.
Westcott also highly recommends keeping yourself far away from distractions. Doing so helps you become more observant and aware of your surroundings. Try and avoid areas that are too crowded and trying going out on photo trips alone.
Lastly, it’s important to realize that there’ll be days when you might not take a single photo that you like. As Westcott rightly points out, don’t take it as a day wasted. Treat it as a part of the process and transform it into a learning opportunity.
Put these tips into practice every time you shoot and they’ll definitely improve your street photography over time.
