We all thought it was just bad lighting or the stress of actually having to be in the DMV that contorted our faces into scowls. Thanks to a video created by The Huffington Post we now know the truth: the DMV photographer takes sick pleasure in seeing our face fall the moment we see our new ID:
Some helpful tips for making a horrible photo:
- Count down from 5 but take the photo on 3.
- Confuse the subject by having them look at a decoy camera.
- Blind your subject with the flash.
We’ve always suspected it but now we know, the DMV has made taking a bad photo into an art form.

I’m shocked that you have personal identifying information – driver’s license number, address, name, DOB – in live images on this page. I hope those are not real people. If they are, you should redact DL number, address, and DOB right away. That is a massive security issue.
