Timelapse: Watch an Amish Barn Raising in Under 4 Minutes

In a certain era, especially on the American frontier in the 18th and 19th centuries, barn raisings were quite an event. Communities would gather to help a fellow farmer tackle the formidable task of building or re-building a barn. Making a day of it, there would be food, friendly competition, and plenty of hard work.

This tradition continues, basically unchanged, in some Amish and Mennonite communities and even outside of these religious groups, especially in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and some rural parts of Canada. Today, we’re featuring a unique timelapse sequence of an Amish barn raising in Ohio—a surprisingly speedy 10-hour construction (there’s the power of teamwork for you) compressed down to three and a half minutes:
