You know that old saying about nothing being friendlier than a wet dog? Well, so has Seth Casteel, and you could say the photographer took the affable expression and ran with it. Casteel has photographed more than 300 dogs as they splash, dive, fetch, and float around in swimming pools, which makes for a rather unique portfolio. In fact, the photographs have gained so much attention that Casteel has just released a photobook titled, Underwater Dogs, which contains some of his favorite shots from the project. Take a look at the following video to see what it’s like behind the scenes of these adorable portraits:
Casteel says buying the waterproof housing was a splurge, but one that payed off. At the time of purchasing it, the housing was beyond his budget, but, like a true photographer, Seth Casteel decided to pony up the cash anyway and follow his dream. He posted the photos to a photo social media site on a Thursday night and by Friday morning Casteel’s website crashed from the overwhelming response of people purchasing prints.
Casteel has since received thousands of inquiries requesting private photo shoots of pooches from all around the world and has beefed up his website, which is now receiving over 100,000 hits a day. So next time you deprive yourself of a piece of gear you’ve been dying to purchase, you may want to keep Casteel’s story in mind!
“At the heart of it, dogs have wild instincts. For me, it’s all about seeing those wild instincts come through underwater. They’re getting back to being wild. They really love being wild. And under water, they have the best chance of doing that.”
