Just as digital cameras are improving, so do the memory cards. They’re partners anyway hence, it’s just fitting that when one advances, the other follows suit.
Sony has just released its latest top performing memory cards. The XQD S series boast of a 168/s read-write speeds that exceeds that of the Compact Flash Cards that has a speed limit of only 167 MB/s.
The New XQD Format Memory Card
The fast speed allows people to easily transfer large volumes of images to the computer. And with a storage capacity of 64GB, any user will enjoy capturing as many images as he or she wants with his digital camera.
Sony’s new memory card is most ideal for shooting fast action scenes including the men’s 100m sprint from start to end. With its 10fps speed, it lets any camera user capture intense action without much difficulty through the non-stop burst of RAW images.
This storage media also works well with the Nikon D4 professional DSLR. And it comes with a free driver software that allows your images to be transferred to your computer easily via a card reader.
Already out in the market, the card is priced at $129.99 for the 16GB and $229.99 for the 32GB. An ExpressCard adapter is also available.
Apart from Sony, Nikon, Lexar and SanDisk also manufacture XQD memory cards known as the smaller successor to the CompactFlash. The biggest selling point of this type of storage media is its fast transfer speed.
Just recently, top flash card maker Lexar also announced it will be supporting the XQD format. It was not clear, though, whether it will also be manufacturing the card and the flash card readers. A Lexar official said they are committed to providing innovative photography solutions and they are now partnering with Nikon to offer and market the XQD. He said the company is confident the XQD card will achieve their goal of increasing interface speed far better than the CompactFlash type.
Early this year, Sony also revealed that Canon and Panasonic have expressed their interest in their XCD format. There was no confirmation, however, whether the two companies will be following Sony’s footsteps of creating this new and fast-speed memory card.
Currently, the SD card is still the top selling in the market owing to its competitive price. It is widely used not only in digital cameras but as well as video cameras and other devices including the tablets and PCs. CompactFlash is commonly used in high-end cameras such as the DSLR.
On the other hand, Toshiba has just released its Exceria Type 1 SDHC memory cards this July. With three storage sizes available (8GB, 16GB, 32GB), this card has a maximum read speed of 95MB per second and write speed of 90MB per second.
The Exceria series complies with the SD memory card standard and offers various series. The series includes Type 1, Type 2 and Type HD. Each has three versions with different storage capacities. With its speed, Toshiba claims they have the world’s fastest class data transfer speed.
